The Socratic method of questioning is perhaps one of the
oldest forms of teaching. However, in the last few decades,
it has been making a comeback in classrooms across the
country as a new instructional method. This method is
unique in the sense that the students learn to take responsibility
for classroom discussions. On average, the traditional
class discussion is 95% teacher-led, and only 5% of the time
do students have an opportunity to speak. Socratic Seminars
attempt to reverse this trend. When paired with other
instructional methods such as discovery process and
decision making, the Socratic method of teaching can help
all students develop lifelong skills such as problem solving
and critical thinking that today's changing world requires.
