Steve Varga IV
7th Grade Language Arts and Reading
A.W. Junior High--Room 114
Conference Period (10:05-10:35)
Mr. Varga’s Language Arts classes will continue working on the research paper that is due on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 as a fourth quarter grade. This final copy of the research paper must be typed according to MLA guidelines and also submitted electronically to TurnItIn.com. Students will have two in-school assignments that will help them practice submitting to TurnItIn.com; in addition, there will be two afterschool study sessions the last week of March for any student who does not have home access to a printer or the internet for the electronic submission requirement. Time will be spent in class explaining what plagiarism is, how to avoid it, and what its consequences are according to the Student Handbook. Lessons will utilize the previous work with the fact cards to help students create a Roman Numeral outline. This outline will assist students in the writing of the rough draft of the research paper. While there will be work to complete at home for each of the steps of this research paper, class time will be set aside for questions as well as peer editing.

Reading classes will finish reading their in-class novel, The Light in the Forest. Students are encouraged to re-read chapters the same night after we have read them in class as a way to improve comprehension. Activities with the novel will include vocabulary assignments, literary elements review, and historical/ informational readings related to the story. There will be comprehension quizzes throughout the reading of the novel as well. During the month of March, classes will also continue to work on short answer and extended response test-taking skills for the upcoming OAAs at the end of April.
