Waterville Primary School will be awarded $5,000 to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) learning initiatives through the Ohio STEM Learning Network Classroom Grant Program, funded by philanthropy from Battelle.
The grant will fund a project entitled, Conservation Starts from the Ground. Students in kindergarten through grade four will learn the importance of environmental stewardship by studying soil and water conservation practices. As a part of ongoing relationships with Xcite Learning, the Toledo Zoo, Lucas County Water and Soil Conservation District, Bowling Green State University, and the Northwest Ohio Center for STEM education, students will conduct experiments in the school’s Land Lab and Native Prairie.
“Students will have the opportunity to use a variety of age-appropriate scientific tools to collect, analyze and interpret data to begin to understand the connections between soil, water, the Earth and human health,” said Dr. Jamie Hollinger, Waterville Primary Principal. “These activities will also support the development of critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration skills.”
Waterville Primary School is committed to creating a culture of STEM and providing real-world, hands-on opportunities for exploration and learning. In addition to the outdoor Learning Lab and Native Prairie, the school is proud to offer a 3D printing club, LEGO club, and a wide variety of other technologies and activities to support STEM learning and development.
A total of 197 Ohio public schools, including Waterville Primary School, have been recognized with this prestigious award.
