Staff Spotlight: The AWLS Technology Team

AWLS Technology Team

by Ashlyn Shafer, AWHS Senior and Communications Intern

With today’s ever-changing developments in technology, digital communication, and processing power, it is up to Anthony Wayne’s talented team of four IT professionals to keep both the digital, and physical school district running.

There is no such thing as a “normal day” for these individuals, because with the world of tech moving so fast, they are spending every day keeping themselves one step ahead. The Director of Technology, Chris Hamady, and his team, spend their days doing everything from laptop repairs and camera installs, to installing high speed internet throughout the district so that every student is able to access their assignments in a safe and efficient way.

Tuesday, September 17 is National IT Professionals Day, and to acknowledge this holiday, we asked the Anthony Wayne Technology Teama few questions about their school IT professionals, and they shared their thoughts.

What does a “normal” day at work look like?

The resounding answer was “What’s normal?”! IT is the kind of profession where there is no such thing as a routine, and every day is spent solving different types of problems. As Chris Hamady said, “Each day has unique challenges, situations, problems and successes. The only thing "normal" about my day would be the constant communication with our technology team. We work extremely closely together to resolve any and all technology issues in the shortest amount of time possible.”

What is your favorite part of your job?

In the growing field of IT, there are so many potential jobs and issues that may arise in a single day, many of which we are trailblazing for the first time, and finding solutions as we go, as Devin Filip, Technology Specialist said, “My favorite part of this job is the feeling I get when solving a new problem. We see a lot of common issues in our line of work, but every now and then something unique comes up that requires us to think critically and sometimes even develop our own software or procedures to resolve the problem. Overcoming difficulties and discovering new ways to solve problems gives me a sense of pride and keeps me learning new things in the IT field.”

David Hadley, Technology Specialist agreed that his favorite part of his job is, “Being able to problem solve daily, and working with others with technology to make their lives efficient.”

Why do you think IT is so crucial in a school environment?

Nicki Sattler, Technology Specialist said, “IT is crucial in schools because it is a lifelong skill that students will always need. Very few jobs today do not use a computer or some form of technology in their everyday roles. Getting those fundamental skills in school will help build a good foundation for students, especially as technology changes and evolves.”

Was there someone in your life who pushed you towards IT?

Nicki Sattler’s story is one that many may not expect, that while she liked computers as a child, she went into education initially. When changing careers later in life, she realized her love for problem solving combined with her computer skills, and decided to go into IT.

Chris Hamady also has a pretty unconventional career path as well, stating, “No one pushed me towards IT, and during the 90s, I was actually applying for a job as a music teacher. The principal of the school saw that I had computer experience on my resume, and offered me two positions: music teacher and technology coordinator. Once that happened, I began to really study Steve Jobs and how important it was for him and Apple to make people's lives better. Every day our department tries to make people's lives better by creating and supporting highly usable educational technology environments.”

Overall, Anthony Wayne depends heavily on this team of four whose adaptability, flexibility and critical thinking skills are critical to the smooth operations of the district.  We appreciate their commitment to supporting our students’ learning and teachers’ instruction. Happy IT Professional’s Day!
