Gemma Vanni, a fourth-grade student at Waterville Primary School, has been selected as a student author in the The Grannie Annie Family Story Celebration's 19th annual collection. Her story, titled "Lady, the Hero," recounts a childhood tale from her grandfather's life on their family farm.
The Grannie Annie, a nonprofit based in St. Louis, invites students nationwide to explore their family histories and share captivating tales. Gemma's narrative was selected from over 240 submissions this year, showcasing her creativity and storytelling skills.
Inspired by her grandfather's experiences, Gemma's story highlights a moment of bravery and companionship involving a young boy and his dog. Her retelling of his misadventure blends drama and entertainment, making it entertaining to the reader.
"I'm so hyped to be published," Gemma said, expressing her excitement. Her grandfather, Dan Miller shares her enthusiasm, and has encouraged Gemma to get a print copy of the publication.
Aside from writing, Gemma enjoys reading series like "A Series of Unfortunate Events" and "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series. She also takes piano lessons, plays basketball, and creates art - sometimes selling her pieces at her mother's art shows.
Gemma participated in The Grannie Annie submission process as a writing assignment from her gifted ELA teacher, Jennifer Thomas.
“She has the kindest heart and the best sense of humor,” Mrs. Thomas said. “Gemma is both creative and self motivated to always do her best. This shines through in her written work.”
Gemma is the daughter of Gianni and Sarah Vanni.
