Facilities Master Planning

Evaluating Our Facilities Needs

About Facilities Master Planning
A Facilities Master Plan is developed and used to guide the long-term maintenance and management of an organization's buildings and properties to ensure they meet its needs today and into the future. AWLS last completed a facilities assessment and prepared a Facilities Master Plan during the 2015-16 school year.

That work guided the renovations made at five of our six schools and the construction of a new Whitehouse Primary School. The District is once again evaluating its facilities needs to ensure our buildings remain in good working order, meet the expectations of our community and provide an excellent learning environment for our students now and into the future.

Anthony Wayne Local Schools has enlisted the help of The Collaborative, a local architecture firm to assist with this process.

Facilities Master Planning Process

Mid-May Update

The Collaborative presented its final recommendations to the Anthony Wayne Board of Education at the May 15, 2023 meeting. The District will now work to develop a Facilities Master Plan. This plan will include the projects the District intends to pursue over the next several years.  A project priority list and timeline will follow.

Early May Update

The Collaborative held a public meeting at Anthony Wayne High School on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 to share several proposed concept drawings for improving District facilities based on the following:

  • Educational Facilities Concepts
Using recent facility assessments, previous survey data from stakeholders, a new enrollment study, and input from specific District staff, The Collaborative developed three different concepts in an effort to address:
    • some of the current facilities assessment needs;
    • the addition of an all-day kindergarten program;
    • enrollment growth at Whitehouse and Waterville Primaries; and
    • instructional needs in other District buildings

  • Athletic Facilities Concepts
The Collaborative also presented three options for addressing the athletics complex needs identified using the facility assessments, survey data from stakeholders and input from specific District staff.

Next Steps
Using the information gathered from the May survey, The Collaborative will prepare a final recommendation to the Board of Education at its May 15 meeting. The District will then work to develop a Facilities Master Plan. This plan will include the projects the District intends to pursue over the next several years. A project priority list and timeline will follow.

Facilities Planning Update: April 2023

The Collaborative, the architectural firm that is helping the District create a facilities master plan, is using the input from the recent facilities survey to propose potential facility upgrade options.

This month, the District and the Collaborative will share these options with all stakeholders and gather additional feedback to finalize the new facilities master plan for the District. Your input is essential to this process. Please look for future communications on upcoming opportunities to share your thoughts.

Facilities Planning Update: March 2023

Thank you to all staff, parents, community members and students who completed the recent District Facilities Survey. Your feedback is helping the District focus its research efforts on the future facility options preferred by our community. The District and the Collaborative are reviewing your responses and analyzing data to determine potential facility options and their associated costs.

When the District has a better picture of the details surrounding the preferred updates to our buildings and grounds, it will once again ask stakeholders to weigh in on the available choices. Through this process, a Facilities Master Plan will be developed. Please watch for more opportunities to share your feedback coming soon.

Also part of the Facilities Master Plan are recommendations from The Collaborative’s Facilities Assessment. Much like a home inspection, their report was a comprehensive review of the District’s facilities to provide recommendations on what repairs and upgrades should be addressed immediately, improvements that should be considered soon, and those projects that are considered options. (i.e. boiler replacement due to age/functionality vs. lighting upgrades for cost savings) In case you missed it, The Collaborative shared their findings at the February board meeting. A recording of this presentation is available online here.

Facilities Survey: February 2023

Facilities Planning Survey: February 1, 2023

Dear Anthony Wayne Community:
This letter is to provide you an update on the District’s Facilities Master Plan and to give you an opportunity to share your thoughts about our school buildings and other facilities.

Research shows the physical environment of school facilities has an impact on how our students learn in the classroom and their experiences in extracurricular activities. In an effort to ensure that our facilities meet the needs of our students now and into the future, the District partnered with The Collaborative, a local architecture firm to complete a facilities assessment and master plan.

Presentation to the Board of Education
The Collaborative has completed its facilities assessment and will present their findings to the Board of Education on Monday, February 6. This presentation will include a snapshot of the current condition of all District buildings.

This facilities assessment will help the District develop a Facilities Master Plan, a document outlining the District’s goals for maintaining and improving our buildings and grounds based on current and future needs.

Your Feedback is Needed
We want to hear your thoughts about how the District can improve its facilities in order to achieve its mission of empowering students to be future-ready. All District stakeholders are invited to complete a survey about potential renovations and/or new construction within the District.

Please click here to complete the survey by February 16. [The survey is now closed]

Next Steps
The District and The Collaborative will use this community input to further refine the potential options to be included in the Facilities Master Plan. As this work moves forward, watch for more opportunities to learn more and share your thoughts at upcoming community meetings.

We value your input in this process as the District strives to provide educational facilities that facilitate positive impacts for students - from learning in the classroom to participating in extracurricular activities.

Facilities Planning Update: June 2022

Starting next week, the District will work with The Collaborative, a local architectural and facility master planning firm to review our facilities needs to ensure our buildings and properties will meet the needs of our students into the future. As a part of this process, their team will conduct walkthroughs, review community data, complete a facilities assessment and develop a facilities master plan. Updates will be shared as we move through this process and more information is available.

Facilities Master Planning: May 2022

A facilities master plan is used to guide the long-term maintenance and management of a school district's buildings and properties to ensure they meet the needs of students today, and into the future.

This planning process was last used during the 2015-16 school year. At that time, the facility master plan recommended and guided the renovations made at five of our six schools and the construction of the new Whitehouse Primary School.

An architectural and facility master planning firm will be chosen to conduct research, evaluate the District’s needs, gather stakeholder input, and develop a new facility master plan.

The District will work with the selected firm to develop a timeline for completion and implementation of the plan, but approval is expected by late fall/early winter of the 2022-23 school year.

The comprehensive nature of the strategic and facilities research and planning process does take some time, and we are grateful for each of the participants in this collaborative effort. Once complete and approved, the District Strategic Plan and Facility Master Plan will guide the District’s decision making for the next several years.

Updates will be provided to our community as they become available.
