The Purple Star Generals at Waterville Primary School and Anthony Wayne Junior High met with representatives of the Ohio Military Interstate Children's Compact Commission on March 20, 2024. The students shared their experiences as military-connected students and the many activities that they take part in to show their appreciation for our military.
In attendance were Pete LuPiba, the Ohio MIC3 Commissioner; Jason Scragg from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce; Tamara Puff, Executive Director for Military & Veteran Relations; special guest Deb Munis, Tennessee Military Family Education Liaison at the Tennessee MIC3, and school Purple Star Liaisons, Chad Marzec, Liberty Benton Schools; Jenn Davis, Huber Heights City Schools; Michelle Lewis, Olentangy Local Schools and Ashley Twedt, Clearfork Valley Local Schools.
Students were presented with Purple Star lapel pins, who gifted each visitor with a specially designed and 3D printed Purple Star keychain. Hosts for the MIC3 quarterly meeting were AWLS Purple Star Liaisons, Christine Young, Jamie Hollinger, Matt Beakas and Jillian Cowell.
The Purple Star Generals are military-connected students at Anthony Wayne Local Schools. They meet regularly to share their experiences and support one another through the unique challenges of having a loved one serve in the military. The students also plan and participate in a number of events and service projects to show appreciation for our military throughout the year. Each of the Anthony Wayne Local Schools buildings is designated as a Purple Star School for their efforts to support military-connected students and families.
The Ohio MIC3 exists to support students by removing barriers to educational success due to frequent relocations and deployments as a part of the U.S. military. Its goal is to provide consistency across states for receiving academic credit and eligibility for participation in student activities.
