Letter to Second Grade Families

April 21, 2024

Dear 2nd Grade Families,
Your child completed the Educate to Protect Program last week.  During this lesson entitled "I Spy a Safe Situation," students learned to be aware of their surrounding environments, in order to be able to identify potentially dangerous or harmful situations.  Students learned that we all have an "inner alarm," which is a feeling we get when something seems wrong, weird, or bad - in order to warn us when the situation is not right and could be unsafe.

We discussed the importance of being aware of your surroundings, listening to your inner alarm, and telling a trusted adult - if your inner alarm goes off and you are in need of help.  We also learned about the differences between safe and unsafe situations and what to do and say, if a situation is unsafe or becomes unsafe.

Students learned about and practiced the Universal Distress Symbol, a nonverbal method of symbolizing to others that you are in danger and need help, when you are unable to verbally ask for assistance.

Finally, students learned about the strategy of creating and utilizing a family code word that can be used in emerging situations, in order to allow for family members to effectively communicate with each other to ensure a more safe situation for everyone involved.

Below are links to information that summarizes what your child learned in the lesson and provides additional parent & child resources for families.  If you have any further questions regarding the program or if I can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for your assistance in helping to keep our children safe!
