Sophomores in Renee Pellerite and JoAnna Studer's English Language Arts classes were encouraged to select their own novel by participating in a Book Speed Dating activity. With help from Adrienne Amborski at the Waterville Branch Library, students got the chance to choose from dozens of books from across eight genres.
Thanks to a partnership with the library, they can check the book out using their library card and have it conveniently delivered to the school. The students now will spend time committed to silent sustained reading of their chosen book during ELA class.
By hosting engaging experiences that offer student choice, the teachers are hoping that students will discover more about themselves and rediscover the joy of reading while gaining literacy and life skills.
