Anthony Wayne High School architecture students were awarded $6,375 in cash prizes and $5,000 in scholarships in the American Institute of Architects Toledo Chapter’s 73rd Annual High School Design Competition.
Participants were challenged to design a building for the East Toledo Family Center. The indoor specifications included a daycare room, sensory room, lobby, multipurpose room, computer lab and various other spaces. The outdoor areas were to have a basketball court, playground, outdoor classroom and landscaping.
“This is a 10-week competition that runs from January through March,” said Todd Heslet, AWHS Architectural Drafting and Design Teacher. “Many students put in extra hours outside of the class day to complete their designs.”
Eighteen AWHS students and 51 other students from 10 other area schools submitted their designs for consideration. Several students won in multiple categories across the competition, with nine AWHS students bringing home 20 of the 30 awards given.
